Golf in Vail

Vail’s world-class golf courses blend seamlessly with the valley’s rushing creeks, pine and aspen forests and Rocky Mountain peaks. Whether you’re conquering a challenging fairway or just enjoying a relaxed round, you’re in for some scenic swings. Schedule your tee time at one of these Vail golf clubs, all a quick jaunt from the villages.

Vail Golf Club

Set against the craggy backdrop of the Gore Range, Vail Golf Club’s laid-back vibe pairs perfectly with soaring peak views. This 18-hole course sits at 8,200 feet, which adds a bit of distance to your game — shots tend to go farther thanks to the thin mountain air. The 6,739-yard course follows the curves of Gore Creek and is surrounded by towering aspens so expect plenty of photo opts in the early fall when those groves start glowing gold. End the day with a reservation at the on-site Grill on the Gore for brie and bacon-jam-covered turkey clubs and a cool Eagle River Pilsner.

Sonnenalp Golf Course

Just outside of Vail, Sonnenalp Club is a luxurious and secluded spot for golfing. Known for its long season and lush landscape, this 18-hole course stretches over 7,100 yards with streams, flowers and aspen trees lining the fairways. It’s a peaceful place to enjoy the game, with enough variety to keep things interesting. After you pack up your caddie bag for the day, check out their other amenities like the spa, tennis courts and pool or grab juicy burger and white-truffle-oil tater tots at Harvest Restaurant & Bar, which serves up some great views to go with your meal. Guests of the Sonnenalp Hotel in Vail have preferred access to this course.

Mini Golf

For something a little more kid-friendly, there’s a fun-filled mini-golf course at the base of the Eagle Bahn Gondola in Lionshead Village. This nine-hole course is part of the Vail Mountain Epic Discovery experience and is perfect for families looking to spend some time outdoors. Plus, it’s got a wildlife theme: As the kiddos play, they’ll learn about local fauna like elk, marmots and mountain lions. The course isn’t far from Gore Creek, so even while putting, you’ll hear the sound of the burbling water.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the golf season in Vail?

Golfing in Vail typically runs from mid-May through early October — depending on how quickly the snow melts — but the exact timing can vary year to year.

What should I wear golfing in Colorado?

Weather can change quickly at higher elevations, so dressing in layers is a smart move. Mornings can be cool, but the sun warms things up fast, so be ready to shed throughout the day. Rain gear is also a good idea since mountain showers are common in the afternoon.

Does the elevation affect my golf game?

Definitely. The higher elevation makes the air thinner, so your ball will carry farther than it would at lower altitudes. It’s something to keep in mind when selecting clubs and adjusting your swing.

Do I need to book tee times in advance?

Reserving a tee time is a good idea, especially during the busy summer months. Some courses, like Sonnenalp, offer priority tee times for Sonnenalp Hotel guests, which can be a plus if you’re planning to stay nearby.
