Vail, Colo., April 23, 2025 — GoPro Mountain Games organizers and USA Climbing announced today that Olympic athletes have signed up to compete in the debut speed climbing competitions at this year’s event June 5-8. These new competitions, including the YETI North American Cup Series Vail – Speed, mark an invigorating expansion of the Mountain Games’ climbing lineup at the new speed wall at the Bulleit Hangout in Golden Peak.
“We’re thrilled to add speed climbing to our lineup of world-class competitions at the GoPro Mountain Games,” said Peggy Wolfe, Senior Director of Operations for the Vail Valley Foundation, which organizes the GoPro Mountain Games. “As we continue to evolve with the adventure sports landscape, partnering with USA Climbing allows us to showcase this explosive Olympic discipline while providing our athletes and spectators an unforgettable experience.”
Olympians currently registered include Zach Hammer and Emma Hunt, with more expected to sign up as the event draws closer.
Recognized as one of the fastest-growing Olympic sports, speed climbing challenges athletes to scale a standardized 15-meter wall in record-breaking time. These events promise to deliver a high-adrenaline experience for athletes and spectators alike.
Enthusiasm for the sport continues to grow following USA Climbing’s recent announcement that the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles will award individual medals for each climbing discipline: Boulder, Lead, and Speed.
“It’s huge to see speed climbing added to the GoPro Mountain Games,” said Olympic speed climber Zach Hammer. “This sport is all about explosive energy, precision, and mental focus — and there’s nothing like the crowd energy in Vail. It’s the perfect place to showcase just how exciting speed climbing really is.”
“For years, the North American Cup at the GoPro Mountain Games has been one of our favorite events,” said Marc Norman, President and CEO of USA Climbing. “This year, we’re excited to introduce fans to the fastest-growing discipline and welcome our speed athletes to a venue unlike any other.”
