Vail is a mecca for outdoor adventures, and this is demonstrated in several high-adrenaline events throughout the spring, summer and fall months the opportunities include: Vail’s Whitewater Race series in the Spring, the iconic GoPro Mountain Games in June, the Kids Adventure Games in August, and trail running and mountain bike races throughout the summer. Each offers the chance to participate, if you’re up to the challenge, or watch and cheer on the competitors’ incredible athleticism giving their all!
Vail Whitewater Race Series – Tuesdays, May 10 -June 7th
Catch the whitewater action Tuesdays starting at 4:30pm at the Vail Whitewater Park at the International Bridge. Each week kayakers, stand-up paddle-boarders and 2-person rafters will tackle different courses to the finish line.
GoPro Summer Mountain Games – June 7 – 12
The GoPro Mountain Games are the country’s most celebrated festival of adventure sports, art and music and they return to Vail. Watch professional and amateur athletes compete in a range of events, pushing their limits in the elevation and beauty of Vail. Complimenting the competitions are live music concerts, free activities, film screenings, parties and an incredible display of adventure and outdoor gear throughout the sprawling Gear Town.
Vail King of the Mountain Volleyball – June 16 – 19
One of Vail’s longest running sporting events, King of the Mountain Volleyball has been a part of each summer since 1972. Drawing hundreds of teams from all over the Rocky Mountain region, this tournament takes place over Father’s Day weekend each year.
Vail Kids Adventure Games – August 10 – 14
The toughest kids adventure race on the planet! Set in an environment of healthy competition and challenging obstacles. Designed exclusively for kids ages 6-14, the Kids Adventure Games is a multi-discipline obstacle adventure race, where kids, in teams of two, compete together on bikes, in water and on foot through a unique 2.5-4 mile adventure course featuring up to 15 man-made and natural obstacles. Dynafit Trail Running Series: Mid May – Mid September
Don’t miss out on Colorado’s oldest and most iconic trail running race series, featuring some of the most scenic trails in the state. Compete against yourself, your friends or world-class athletes during any or all of the seven races in and around Vail.
New! Youth Trail Running Series – Thursday Nights
The Vail Rec District is excited to offer a new three-race series to get the next generation of trail runners excited about the sport! Three races will take place throughout the summer on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m.
Mountain Bike Race Series
Mountain bike racing season is right around the corner! Join the Vail Recreation District for the 2022 Bloch & Chapleau Mountain Bike Town Series starting in May. Two NEW races are featured for 2022: the adults-only, single-stage Son of Middle Creek Enduro race debuts on July 6, and the Vail Grind on Aug. 31 returns to Vail Mountain for the first time since 2015. Back for a 39th year with challenging and exciting racing for mountain bikers of all ages and experience levels. This summer, over 1,200 riders will compete for over $30,000 in prizes and priceless bragging rights. Whether competing in an individual race or signing up for the entire series, racers and teams have the chance to win awesome prizes and personal glory!
The Youth Mountain Bike Race Series, presented by Yeti’s Grind, showcases younger riders ages eight to 17. Youth riders are invited to participate in every race in the town series, with the exception of the Son of Middle Creek Enduro race on July 6, which is limited to adults only (junior elite riders are also welcome). The Minturn Mini Kids Race on May 25 is for kids only and lets young riders have the spotlight!
